John Lockwood Kipling and Alice Kipling notebooks, [ca. 1889-1931].

Notebook kept by John Lockwood Kipling with rough drafts and notes for his book Beast and man in India, with many additional notes on the life and customs of Indian workmen. Included are quotations from various writers on the general subject of working people, including passages of poems by Rudyard Kipling. Laid in are two manuscript items, one a letter from M. H. Stein to Mr. Kipling (probably John Lockwood Kipling) dated July 25, 1892, the other an unsigned description of "An Indian hawking party." Also, an elaborately bound diary kept by Alice Kipling (later Fleming), which includes brief entries on a visit from her brother Rudyard and the deaths of their mother (Nov. 23, 1910) and father (Jan. 26, 1911).

Alice Macdonald Fleming (1868-1948) was the only sister of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), the author. She married Colonel John M. Fleming (1858-1942). From the guide to the Macdonald Papers, 1890-1935, (University of Sussex Library) Fleming was the daughter of John Lockwood Fleming and Alice Macdonald and sister of Rudyard Kipling. She married Col.
